Would I remember this December ?

December 3, 2008

December’s here. It was almost a year ago that I re-took my GMAT and got a dream score. That was a time when I had no idea about any of the US schools, but friends and wise ones began insisting to consider an MBA from US. With your score, you can get into the Harvard. You can get into any school. Anywhere. Yes these were people who had never applied for an MBA, but they had all heard of ‘that’ friend who did an MBA from ‘that’ school. I never took what they said seriously. I am sure neither did they. In my knowledge too, I hardly had anyone within my circle who had an MBA from the US. Forget the Elites and Ultra Elites. I knew noone who was even an MBA.

One year later, let me tell you this. 4 schools have rejected me, 2 after an interview (both non-US), and 2 without (both non-Indian). The GMAT score can go to hell. It’ll be valid there for 5 years too.

Moral of the story – High GMAT does not an admit make. Low GMAT does not an admit break.

If you’re in a similar position like me with a High GMAT and don’t know what to do with it, select wisely the friends whom you speak to. Ensure these are people with some idea about the MBA scene. In fact, due (sorry, do) all the diligence before you go for GMAT. I took a slightly different approach, and you can see where I stand a year later.

—————-

Duke and Tuck, would you interview me anytime soon ? Don’t tell me I’m so good that an interview isn’t required, or so bad that an interview isn’t useful. The first set of results are due 2 weeks from now. I was kind of hoping that you took the honor of ending my ordeal.

Kellogg – why so serious? Going by your track record, I know you can easily be the first one. If its positive, tell me now! I want to remember this December, for all the right reasons! I have enrolled for a student led session in my city just before Christmas, so was thinking if you could, you know, play the Santa Claus earlier and gift me my best gift ever ?

Ross – Since December would be kind of busy, you can sponsor my happiness for the whole of January. I don’t think I’ll hear from you anytime before, right ? Take your time, I’ll be waiting for you. And oh yes, the new facility is cool. I pictured a fit already when I saw those awesome pictures.

Emory – I have your essays ready. I quite liked your essay questions, hope you’d like my answers too. And I know you are pretty fast, with your rolling speed and all. I’ve managed to wake my recommenders again just for you, please don’t disappoint them. Show me the true meaning of last but not the least, and I would reciprocate.

Take care schools. Its been a long time coming, don’t make me wait any longer. Or rather, make me wait. For another 8 months before I officially become a part of you.

Such a poetic response you write to all of your schools… Maybe you should go into creative writing as well!

I hope you receive good news from all of them. And I am glad you like our new building. I will have my first chance to enjoy it fully this weekend, and I’ll be sure to tell you how it is! If you haven’t yet seen our newly redesigned “New Home” micro site, I invite you to visit: http://www.bus.umich.edu/newhome/

    Que todo sea bien!
